10 Reasons to Find Freedom in Your Own Skin (and Why We View Wrinkles All Wrong)
Share
I have an embarrassing confession to make. I was once 100% obsessed with looks. And not just mine—everyone's. I am not proud of this, but I used to judge a book by its cover. Where I'm from, appearances matter. And if you weren't good-looking, you were overlooked, tossed aside, or forgotten about.
Getting older meant that I was no longer young and beautiful (in the conventional sense). It's sad to say but being 'pretty' was my whole world, and I didn't want it to end. Not ever.
As time went on, it got harder and harder to deal with. What were once simple lines soon enough turned into crevices that looked like claws taking over my face.
Getting my face 'done' was never an option. As a nurse, I knew too much about the ingredients and the potential side effects. Applying a filter to my photos wasn't my thing either—it felt too much like lying to myself. I wasn't a fan of makeup, so attempting to cover my wrinkles also wasn't an option. And 'anti-wrinkle' creams? They just made my skin dry and blotchy.
So, what could I do?
By the time I reached 40, I honestly felt that I wasn't worthy of showing my face online. I didn't belong, so I hid from the social media world. And, if I ever dared to have a photo taken, it was behind sunglasses or stiff, half smiles, lest anyone see my crow's feet.
During the 2020 saga, things changed. I saw the world differently. And with that shift, I started seeing wrinkles differently, too. It set me off on a journey of discovery.
I knew I had two choices: wrinkle acceptance and therefore peace and freedom or stay on the hamster wheel of chronic beauty maintenance with no end. I chose the former, and I am so glad that I did.
Now, at the age of 51, I know that wrinkles just are. And I've finally achieved a lifelong dream: to not give a crap about my silly looks. They were never important to begin with. In my heart, I always knew it; now I get to live it.
It didn't happen overnight, but I got there eventually. Not only did I discover that wrinkles are beautiful (just in a different way), but they are also fascinating and—who knew?—full of unexpected value. Now I wear my wrinkles like the badges of honour that they are: proof of life.
Wrinkle acceptance comes with a load of benefits. Allow me to point out 10 reasons to get you started.
#1 Authenticity is Golden Currency
It's often said that honesty is the best policy. And what's more honest than a face full of wrinkles? There's no need to worry about 'imposter syndrome' when it comes to the lines on your face.
Whether it's personal relationships or everyday interactions, people trust an honest face. It's just how we are built. Silence truly is golden: wrinkles SHOW that you're genuine about yourself in a way that no dialogue or self-proclaimed 'I'm an honest person' ever could.
Wrinkles automatically signal to the world 'I have lines on my face, so what?' What you see is what you get, no hidden agendas. You're not lying to yourself and definitely not lying to others.
Not only that, in today's world of fake this and fake that, being authentic is like liquid gold. It sets you apart from the crowd of phonies and automatically places you at a high level of value. Authenticity trumps fakeness any day of the week.
Wrinkles are the real deal—the real you. You've got the 'receipts' with this one.
#2 No More Money Spent on Endless Creams, Serums, or Procedures
I don't know about you, but I have never met a person who didn't like saving money. Think of all the extra cash you can keep in your wallet when you stop buying lotions and potions that—let's be honest—don't really work.
The beauty industry thrives on selling you 'solutions' that only work (if ever) for a short time. They need to validate the advertising lies to continue selling their products that offer a temporary relief to a 'problem' that doesn't even exist.
And your peers? The echo chamber of madness is just fueling your anxiety. Your family and friends don't care how beautiful you are or how smooth your skin is. They care more about reinforcing negative beliefs to make themselves feel better about their own choices.
Instead, you can use that money for holidays by the pool, trips to the ocean, a new car, or making art projects. Or you can use your money to give to those in need or save it for your own stuff.
#3 Say Goodbye to Hours and Hours Wasted at the Mirror, at the Pharmacy, or at the Clinic
I'm asking you to be honest with yourself. How many hours have you wasted staring into the mirror? It's okay; we've all been there. If you're like me, it wasn't only the bathroom mirror, but a magnifying mirror, too.
Eesh, I couldn't even tell you the real answer, even in an estimation. Hours a week for decades is a lot of wasted time—time that I could have used to improve my life or the people around me.
Well, the great news is that with wrinkle acceptance, the only time I look in the mirror nowadays is when I wash my hands or when I care for my skin.
And no more hours researching the 'best' solution to aging skin or lining up at the pharmacy. It takes only a few minutes to oil my face in the morning, and then I'm done.
#4 Allow Your Face to Speak of Life: An Unspoken Language Understood by All
Everything we do—from the smallest interactions to the biggest decisions—involves connecting with others. When that communication is on point, it's like having a superpower that just makes life smoother, happier, and more successful.
In the realm of human connection, wrinkles aren't flaws; they are a vital part of our evolved communication system.
Unlike a robot, a face alive with real expression, conveys the true meaning of your words. How else will someone know if your smile is genuine or if you care deeply? Your facial expressions are just as important as the words that come out of your mouth.
Effective communication builds bridges, not walls. It prevents misunderstanding, stops arguments before they start, and makes everyone feel heard.
Children, especially, learn empathy and social skills from us when our faces move freely. Even our beloved pets read the shifting muscles around our eyes and forehead as a map of our intent. A natural, expressive face prevents 'mixed signals' and replaces a static mask with the clear, honest cues they need to feel safe, creating a much deeper and more intuitive bond.
#5 Your Wrinkles Are Your Unique Signature
Who else is sick and tired of seeing the same faces and images plastered all over social media?
Boring.
Just like no two leaves, thumbprints, or snowflakes are identical, the same goes for your wrinkles. Each one was carved and etched into your skin through life—not manufactured or store-bought.
While we all feel that inherent need to belong—it's hardwired into to us—true belonging comes from embracing our uniqueness, not by erasing it. Showing up as your real self, knowing that this is your greatest contribution to any group, is something to be celebrated.
You truly are one of a kind. No two patterns of wrinkles are alike. And that's a good thing. You were born to be your own unique snowflake.
#6 Stop Fighting Time—An Opponent That Has Never Lost a Fight
We can try all we like to 'turn back the clock,' but who are we kidding? In the history of mankind, fighting time is a battle that has never been won by any human. There's no golden elixir, no 'fountain of youth' hidden in a secret cave high in the mountains. That's the stuff of fairytales.
If 'time' was a person, I'm sure it would be laughing at us. (Or making a bucket load of money.)
When you stop treating the clock as an enemy, a massive weight lifts off your shoulders. Wrinkles are simply the physical evidence that you survived another day, another year, and another decade in this wonderful world.
Time moves forwards, not the other way around. Instead of wasting your energy fighting a losing battle against biology, you get to redirect that force into actually living your life. After all, the clock is going to keep ticking anyway—you might as well enjoy the ride.
#7 End the 'Us Versus Them' Comparison Game
The entire 'anti-aging' industry thrives on making you feel like life is one big competition. It pits you against an impossible standard, creating this toxic 'Us Versus Them' mentality. Honestly, that's precisely how we got into this mess in the first place.
Think about it—we've been trained to compete since day dot. From sibling rivalry to school grades, we are taught to look at others to figure out our own worth. But it's an exhausting, unwinnable war that we end up fighting on three different fronts.
First, you're fighting your past self. We pore over old photos, pining the face we used to have, which just robs us of living in the present. Then, you're fighting societal standards, wasting energy trying to match a static, airbrushed fantasy that doesn't even exist in the real world. And finally, you're fighting everyone else—using every passerby as a measuring stick for your own value.
This continuous loop of judgement and defence turns the simple act of existing in your own skin into a high-stakes sport. When you drop the comparison game, the game ends, and you finally get to just be.
#8 End the Era of 'Fixing' Yourself—There's Nothing to Hide or Erase
We've been conditioned to think that we need to constantly fix, erase, or hide ourselves. I'm here to set the record straight—that's a load of crap.
Wrinkles are as natural as bark on a tree. They're the 'receipts' of your laughter, your sorrow, and every single thing in between. There is absolutely nothing wrong with aging. It happens to the best of us, and those lines are one of the few truly universal things we all share.
Think about a grandmother or an old uncle whose smile can light up an entire room. Those wrinkles shine with the glory of a thousand summer days and hard winter nights.
At the end of the day, inner worth will always outshine a pretty face with lifeless eyes. When your inner beauty is on fire, your true light shines through. And that's the kind of spark that no wrinkles can ever dim.
#9 Wrinkle Acceptance Equals Peace
Peace is one of those things we all dream of, but all too often it seems out of reach. Think about how many times you've said to yourself, 'I just want peace. I just want to be left alone.'
Guess what happens the moment you accept wrinkles?
Peace.
And it's the kind of deep peace that actually lasts. There's no more exhausting competition, and no more fighting a losing battle against a grand illusion. You simply get to exist and live your life to the fullest. By doing that, you show the world what's possible—becoming the change you wish to see without even trying. It just is.
#10 The Freedom of Walking Away From a Battle That Was Never Yours to Fight
The 'anti-aging' warzone is designed to chew you up and spit you out. You didn't sign up to fight the natural biological progression of time. Society handed you that weapon and told you to start swinging.
I know you fought hard and tried your bravest best. But right now, let's do something radically different.
Retreat Soldier!
It's time to put those weapons of mass self-destruction down, because the only way to win this war is by leaving it. The second you step off that battlefield, you realise you don't have to defend anything anymore. You just get to opt out.
Why Do We View Wrinkles All Wrong?
The long answer is a little complicated. It involves a deep dive into our minds, our upbringing, our culture, and our influences. But the short answer is simple. We have been played. We were lied to.
The good news? Wrinkle acceptance doesn't need a 5-year plan or a surgical procedure. It's a simple shift in perspective. You take the propaganda—the lies—you were dealt from birth and turn that narrative on its head.
You Flip the Script.
So, how do you get from 'wrinkles are ugly,' to a place where wrinkles are beautiful, fascinating, and full of immense value, and then to a place where wrinkles just are?
Start small. Begin with neutral acceptance.
No one expects you to go from 'wrinkles are ugly' (my face looks like a smashed crab) to 'wrinkles are beautiful' (my face is a living, breathing memoir) in one sitting. That's unrealistic.
The easiest thing to do is the Post-it Note Challenge. It's simple and requires little effort. Grab a sticky note and write down neutral words grounded in truth, not opinion. Stick these notes on your bathroom mirror, bedroom wall, or any other spot you look at every day.
The idea is to interrupt that immediate impulse of criticism. Instead of 'my wrinkles are ugly,' replace it with 'my face has lines.' Swap 'claws are taking over my eyes' with 'my crow's feet show I've laughed a lot.' Switch the all-too-common phrase 'combat the signs of aging' with 'aging is a privilege.'
A few more examples to try:
- My smile lines.
- My history lines.
- My empathy markers.
As visual learners, we are easily conditioned by the words and images we see every day. With the Post-it Note Challenge you get to decide exactly what brand you are selling to yourself. You can also create a simple screensaver on your phone or tablet. When you wake up your device, you'll immediately see words like:
- Wrinkles are righteous.
- Wrinkles: I've earned them.
- Wrinkles: I've got the receipts.
- Wrinkles are the new cool.
